About HRLJ

The Human Rights Law Journal (HRLJ) is the flagship annual double-blind peer-reviewed publication of National Law University Odisha (NLUO). Dedicated to advancing discourse in national and international human rights, HRLJ provides a platform for critical analysis of contemporary legal challenges and human rights issues through original research, case commentary, and book reviews.

Backed by a distinguished editorial committee and an international advisory board of legal experts, HRLJ fosters innovation in legal writing and encourages multidisciplinary exploration of rights-based issues.

 Themes for Submission

Authors may choose from the following suggested themes (or any related to human rights law:

  • Technology and Human Rights
  • Human Rights of Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons
  • The Right of Asylum and Human Rights
  • National Human Rights Institutions in India
  • International Enforcement of Human Rights
  • Human Rights and Multinational Corporations
  • Rights of Prisoners under Human Rights Law
  • Any other contemporary issue pertaining to Human Rights Law

Types of Submissions Invited

1. Research Articles (Max: 6000 words)

Comprehensive and in-depth analysis of legal and human rights issues using doctrinal or empirical research. Comparative perspectives are welcome.

2. Case Comments/Legislative Notes (Max: 3500 words)

Critical examination of recent or landmark cases, statutes, amendments, or government regulations — discussing legal evolution and future implications.

3. Book Reviews (Max: 2500 words)

Evaluative analysis of books authored by reputed scholars in the domain of human rights and law — focusing on relevance, impact, and unexplored insights.

> Word limits exclude footnotes. Reasonable flexibility may be applied based on content quality.

  • Postgraduate and Doctoral Students
  • Anyone with a keen interest in human rights law
  • Co-authorship: Allowed up to three authors per manuscript

Font: Times New Roman

Main Text: Size 12, 1.5 spacing

Footnotes: Size 10, single spacing

Citation Style: OSCOLA (Oxford Standard for Citation of Legal Authorities)

File Format: .doc or .docx

File Name: Author’s Name + Title of Submission

Headings/Subheadings: Bold, same font and size as main text, with numbering

How to Submit?

Submit your original and unpublished manuscript via email to hrlj@nluo.ac.in.

All entries will undergo a double-blind peer review process and will be evaluated on merit by the Editorial Board.

Important Notes (Editorial Policy)

  • Only original, unpublished manuscripts will be considered.
  • Submissions must not be under review with any other publication.
  • Authors are responsible for ensuring no copyright infringement or plagiarism.
  • All manuscripts will be screened for plagiarism before review.
  • The Editorial Board’s decision is final on all matters related to selection and publication.
  • No publication or submission fees apply.
